Light baby pants are soft cotton pants that pull on over a short-sleeve bodysuit or a long-sleeve bodysuit. They are cut looser than light cotton leggings, so a full diaper and bent knees have room.
They are for mild days, cool floors and crawling. On hot days, a bodysuit alone is enough. In the first weeks, while a newborn lives in one-piece sleepsuits, pants can wait.
- For ages0–3years
- You'll need4–5per size
- Wear them at12–27°C54–81°F
When babies wear them
For a diaper check, slide the pants down. The bodysuit snaps between the legs, so it stays tucked in.
Once your baby crawls, the pants cover the knees on rugs and wooden floors. On a cold or windy day, warm baby pants take over.

Types of light pants

Jogger pants
The everyday pair. The legs narrow into ribbed cuffs, which keep the hems off the feet while your baby crawls or pulls up to stand.

Harem pants
The seat hangs low in a deep U, so a cloth diaper and round thighs fit, and the pants do not pull down at the back. Shops also call them grow-with-me or panda pants.

Footed pants
Pants for the first months, with the feet sewn on, so there are no socks to kick off.

Woven pants
Jeans, chinos and linen are woven cloth, so they barely stretch. Pull-on linen with an elastic waist is the cool pair for a hot day, because air passes through it. Stiff jeans and chinos suit a toddler who walks steadily.
How to choose light pants

1. A wide fold-over waistband
A baby's tummy is round, with no waist to hold pants up. A wide ribbed band, or a tall one folded over, holds them gently without digging in.
- Good: Stays flat when your baby sits
- Good: No red mark on the tummy
- Not good: Narrow elastic that rolls down

2. Ribbed ankle cuffs
Long cuffs let you buy pants a little long. Fold them over at first, and unroll them as the legs grow.
- Good: Long cuffs that fold in half
- Good: Hem stays above the foot
- Not good: Open hem over the toes

3. Soft stretch knit
Cotton jersey (T-shirt fabric), rib or light French terry (soft loops on the inside) stretches every way, so it moves with bent knees on the floor.
- Good: Stretches every way with a tug
- Not good: Stiff woven cloth, like denim
Questions parents ask
Do newborns need pants?
Not in the first couple of weeks. One-piece sleepsuits and bodysuits do not rub the healing umbilical cord stump, and they save a step at every diaper change. Once the stump falls off, soft pull-on pants are handy for daytime.
What are the best pants to wear over cloth diapers?
Harem pants, or joggers that are wide at the hips, over your diaper cover. Slim pants often pinch at the legs or slide down at the back. If you buy a slim cut, go up one size and roll the cuffs.
What is the difference between baby pants and leggings?
Pants are cut loose at the hips and legs, so they pull on easily over round thighs or a cloth diaper. Light cotton leggings hug the leg like thick tights, so they go under a dress, overalls or a snowsuit without bunching.
Why don't more baby pants have feet?
Footed pants are mostly made in sizes Newborn to 6 months, and by 6 to 9 months they are hard to find. Sewn-on feet soon squeeze growing toes, and a baby who crawls and stands needs bare feet to grip the floor.
Can babies wear jeans?
Stiff jeans with a button and a metal zipper can wait until your child walks steadily, because a hard waistband presses into the belly during floor play. If you like the look sooner, baby jeggings are pull-on stretch jeans with a soft waist.
Why are the drawstrings on baby pants sewn shut?
So they cannot pull out into a long loop. Long strings and ribbons don't belong on baby clothes, because they can knot up or wrap around the neck. Many baby pants have a bow for show, or a short tie stitched down inside the back of the waistband.
